Directory submissions used to be the best link building method out there. If you could submit to a mass amount of directories then you were in likeliness due to get a great ranking. But because these began to get so abused Google started to slowly but surely devalue links from directories. The only directories that are beneficial these days seem to be Yahoo and Dmoz.

If you were on-line in 2003-2004 then you would have been awash with requests for link exchanges. Although this technique still exists and you get requests, it really is not worth your time. Google simply acknowledge how to break down link exchanges and depreciate these links.
Blog Farms
Creating a free for all page which was full of anchor text rich links, again a method that used to work well when Google and the other major search engines were in their infancy but doing this now will have absolutely no benefit whatsoever.
In the end you should work to keep active with what works and what does not, it is about trial and error you need to see what works and doesn’t. If something does not work then move on and try again.
